Derby County Mourns the Loss of Former Manager Colin Addison
Derby County Football Club has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Colin Addison, a respected figure in the club’s history who managed the Rams from 1979 to early 1982. His tenure spanned over 100 matches, leaving an indelible mark on the club and endearing him to many supporters during a challenging era.
Born on 18 May 1940 in Taunton, Somerset, Addison enjoyed a distinguished playing career before transitioning into management. He turned out for clubs including York City, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, and Sheffield United, accumulating over 400 appearances and more than 120 goals across his playing years. After hanging up his boots, he took up the managerial mantle at Hereford United in 1971 as a player-manager—making headlines with several notable cup runs and guiding them into the Football League.
His spell at Derby began in July 1979, succeeding the famous Tommy Docherty. Over the next two-and-a-half seasons, Addison presided over 105 games for the Rams, securing 33 wins, 28 draws, and 44 defeats. His time in Derbyshire coincided with a particularly testing period for the club, both on and off the pitch, but his leadership and character earned him admiration.
Beyond Derby, Addison’s managerial career took him across the UK and abroad—serving in roles at Newport County, Celta Vigo, Atlético Madrid, Cádiz, Swansea City, and more. His influence extended far beyond any one club, as he left footprints in football communities in South Africa, Spain, the Middle East, and Wales.
In the club’s statement, Derby County expressed that “the thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family and friends at this difficult time.” The announcement underscores how Addison is woven into the fabric of the club’s history—a leader during demanding times, and a man whose legacy in Derby, as well as across English football, will be remembered with respect.
As tributes pour in from clubs and supporters alike—Nottingham Forest among them issuing condolences for a former player —the football world pauses to reflect on a life of dedication. Colin Addison passed away in Hereford in late October 2025 at the age of 85.
Though he may no longer walk among us, his influence remains alive in the memories of those he coached, the players he mentored, and the fans who revered him. Rest in peace, Colin Addison.
